AI in your interview: what to know
A plain-language explanation of how Truffle uses AI when you interview with a company that uses our platform.
Who we are. Truffle is an interview platform. Companies use us to conduct and score video interviews at scale. We're not your employer, and we don't make hiring decisions. The company interviewing you does.
We're writing this page for candidates: the people actually sitting down to record an interview. If something here is unclear or you want more detail, contact us at legal@hiretruffle.com.
What AI does in your interview
When you record your video interview through Truffle, three things happen:
- Your video is recorded and securely stored.
- The audio is transcribed to text. We use a speech-to-text service that converts what you said into written words.
- AI produces a match score for your answers by comparing them against a rubric specific to the role.
The scores and a summary are then shared with the hiring team at the company you're interviewing with. They review everything before making any decision about your application.
What we do NOT do
- We do not analyze your face. No faceprints, no facial-expression analysis, no appearance-based scoring.
- We do not analyze your voice tone or accent. Speech is transcribed to text. Only the text is scored.
- We do not infer emotion. We're not trying to read how you're feeling.
- We do not create biometric identifiers. Nothing is generated from your video that could identify you biometrically.
- We do not score how polished you sound. A direct, simple answer gets the same score as an elaborate one if the substance is the same. Vocabulary, grammar, and speaking style don't affect your score.
- We do not use your interview to train AI models. Your responses are not used to train or fine-tune any AI model. Ours or anyone else's. This is a contractual commitment in our customer agreements.
- We do not make hiring decisions. The company you're interviewing with reviews the interview and decides.
How scoring actually works
For each question you're asked, the company has defined what a strong answer looks like. That is, what competencies or qualities matter for that specific role. The AI reads your transcribed answer and compares it against those qualities, producing a score. Different jobs have different rubrics. A customer service role is scored differently than a software engineering role, and reasonably so.
A human at the company always reviews before any decision is made.
Your rights
- Decline AI scoring
- If you don't want your interview scored by AI, you can decline consent. The company will be notified and may offer an alternative path, or may choose to close your application. We can't force a company to offer alternatives, but you're not required to consent.
- Request human review
- You can ask for human review of your interview and any decisions made.
- Access your data
- You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct your data
- You can request corrections if any of it is inaccurate.
- Delete your data
- You may request that we delete your interview recording at any time. We honor deletion requests within 30 days, in line with applicable law.
- Understand adverse decisions
- If a company tells you that an AI-influenced decision was made that affects you negatively, you have a right to understand the principal reasons. Contact the company directly, and if they need support, they can request the relevant information from us.
How to exercise these rights

Data handling
Your interview recording and transcript are stored for the retention period set by the company hiring for the role. When the retention period ends, we delete the media from our active systems within 30 days. For full details see our Privacy Policy.
Who processes your data
Truffle uses a small set of third-party services to operate, including speech-to-text transcription, AI scoring providers, and cloud hosting. The full list of sub-processors, along with the purpose of each, is available in our Privacy Policy.
Bias, fairness, and accuracy
AI scoring is not perfect, and we take this seriously. Our system is designed around fairness principles:
- Scoring rubrics are reviewed to avoid criteria that function as proxies for protected characteristics (age, gender, ethnicity, disability, etc.).
- Transcripts-only scoring avoids many of the known-biased inputs other AI interview tools use.
- We commission independent bias audits of our AI system annually. The current audit summary will be published here once the in-progress audit is complete.
- A human from the hiring company reviews interviews before any hiring decision is made. AI is a signal, not a verdict.
